The Santa Ana Mountains offer a wide variety of activities for residents and visitors to this part of California.  A short peninsular range of mountains that run for 35 miles south of the Los Angeles basin and are the border between Orange and Riverside counties.  A number of minerals have been discovered and mined in the mountain range.  Lead, silver, zinc, tin, clay, gypsum, limestone, and coal have all been taken out of the hills since the 1870s.  The Santa Anas start in the north at the Chino Hills and are divided from the southern portion by Santa Ana Canyon which is home to the Santa Ana River.  The highest peak in the range is Santiago and Modjeska which are both over 5,000 feet.  Santiago peak can be climbed and has several trails to the top.  Known to be a fairly strenuous hike it is a 16 mile hike that gains 4,000 feet in elevation.  Many individuals enjoy adventure counseling Santa Ana as part of their treatment plan.  This focuses on uses nature, adventure, and experience to process events in one’s life.  From the summit of Santiago one can see the other peaks in the range and also much of the beautiful Southern California landscape.
