Throughout human history, migration has been a fact of life. However, as a result of globalization, it currently affects more people than ever before. Amnesty International ("People on the move", n.d.) reports that more than 230 million people live outside their country of birth. That is about 3% of the world's global population. And that number grows every day.

In 1938 Abel Meerpol, who was white and Jewish, wrote a poem entitled “Strange Fruit”. He added music in 1939. When Billie Holiday sang it at Cafe Society in Greenwich Village, which was the first integrated club in New York, it became a passionate and disturbing anthem for the Civil Rights movement.
The “Strange Fruit” referred to the lynchings of black men in the South.

According to the Washington Post, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco was invited to speak at a Catholic conference in New York City on June 3.(Gibson, June 3, 2015) The gathering was to discuss reintroducing the Latin Mass, but Cordileone also used his speaking time to declare, “The clear biological fact is that a human being is born either male or female.” He went on to remark about his bewilderment at the concept of gender identity being fluid and socially constructed. He drew laughter in reporting that one university has identified 14 different sexual identities of their students, and that he expects even more to be created over time.
