A new study published in the Journal of Family and Community Health looked at parental sexuality disclosure, discrimination, and depression among Black sexual minority men and Black transgender women. “There were two main goals of our study,” study author, Rodman E. Turpin told us. “First, we wanted to identify the relationship between discrimination and depression among Black sexual minority men and Black transgender women. Discrimination experienced by these populations can include social and structural racism, homophobia, transphobia, and more, so we used a comprehensive measure of discrimination for our study.” [More]

Refugees who wish to settle in Western countries are less likely to have extreme political and religious views. A study published in Psychological Science surveyed 1000 Syrian refugees living in Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan. The researchers found that the majority of refugees were more motivated to return home to Syria than to migrate to Western countries, but those who did want to move to the West were less likely to hold extremist views. Accenture conducted a global survey of 6,000 employees with disabilities, 1,748 executives (of whom 675 have disabilities) and completed 50 video interviews. Their report (Getting to Equal 2020: Disability Inclusion research) shows that most persons with disabilities feel shut out in the workplace at some point in their careers. Employees with disabilities are 27% less likely to feel “included” in the workplace and 60% more likely to feel “excluded,” compared with the average. [More]

A new study published in the Journal of Black Studies explores the impact of publicized killings of Black men and boys by police shared in social media and viewed by underrepresented college students in the U.S. The study, titled: “The Only Thing New is the Cameras”: A Study of U.S. College Students’ Perceptions of Police Violence on Social Media, found that the majority of college students experienced emotional trauma watching the videos. Older refugees can experience high rates of depression even decades after immigrating. A study that looked at Canadians between the ages of 45 and 85 found that refugees were 70 per cent more likely to experience depression when compared with those born in Canada, even if they immigrated decades earlier. In a recent survey of 27,715 transgender adults in JAMA Psychiatry, gender identity conversion efforts (GICE) were associated with higher odds of attempted suicide and severe psychological distress.
