For those who just want to enjoy the outdoor life at a more leisurely pace, Phoenix boasts many water parks, the zoo, and Botanical gardens. Once a predominantly agricultural area, Phoenix used to be known by the name Pumpkinville due to the number of pumpkins that grew along the sides of the canals.  The city was renamed Phoenix to represent the concept of a city emerging from the ruins of the former Hohokam civilization.1 Today a number of global Internet companies are based in Phoenix including Google, Ebay, and AOL. Mental Health in Phoenix

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, well over 200,000 Arizona residents live with a mental illness. As a result, the public mental health system is overburdened and struggles to serve all residents who need mental health counseling. In addition, nearly 17 percent of Arizona residents are on Medicaid and over 1.2 million are uninsured, which further limits access to mental health services for many people who require assistance. 2

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Division of Behavioral Health Services provides valuable information for people regarding mental health issues that impact Phoenix residents. ADHS seeks to educate Arizonans about common mental health issues and provide tools to help improve mental health. ADHS has a crisis hotline for people in Maricopa County that are in immediate need of mental health services. The hotline number is 1-800-631-1314. ADHS also offers culturally competent services for the many specialized populations in the Phoenix area including the elderly, children, veterans, and Native Americans. Information about mental health screenings, drugs and addiction, and services for children with mental health issues are available by calling the Division of Behavioral Health Services at 602-364-4558. 3
