Shelter workers assist adults in finding adequate employment, and help place children in schools or daycare. Job training and social skills training enhance the ability of residents to find gainful employment and appropriately deal with day-to-day challenges. Having a safe, caring place to share one's feelings and experiences is important for many people to overcome barriers to sound mental health. Scottsdale Bible Church offers free support groups for an array of mental health related issues, including eating disorders, grief and loss, addiction and divorce. A divorce group for children is also offered. All groups focus on past strengths and future successes in order to instill hope in participants that positive change can and will occur. Family Services and Assistance Programs
The City of Scottsdale takes an active role in providing social services and assistance programs for area families. The Youth and Family Services Division offers recreational activities, job trainings and educational programs to help kids stay out of trouble and on track to meet their potential. Workshops teach kids about money management, job skills, and making good choices, such as saying no to drugs and alcohol. By providing these services, the city safeguards against the city's youth getting involved in activities that can harm their physical, mental or emotional health.4
The city's Senior Social Services Department provides support to older adults and their families in a variety of ways. Home delivered meals are available to meet the elderly's nutritional needs. To enhance social and emotional functioning, social activities are offered at the city's senior centers, which allow residents to make connections with others in order to stave off loneliness.
