Two friends orchestrated an annual sandcastle competition in 1979, which became famous internationally for the White Rock area.  Low tide offered an advantage of exposed sandy beach with enough time for competitors to create elaborate art work.  Crowds up to 150,000 crowded the beach and the structures were rated for prizes up to $10,000.  In less than 10 years the security costs became insurmountable due to party spoilers and the contest later moved to a new location in the Lower Mainland, namely Harrison Hot Springs.  Christian marriage counselling White Rock BC aims to save marriages and families struggling with issues that seem too difficult to overcome.  Recently, the city has been contemplating a revival of the popular family event.  The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra entertained the residents for several years with a stage on the beach creating sounds that melded with the ocean.  The Spirit of the Sea Festival is celebrated in late summer which includes fireworks at dusk, a parade and numerous beach related activities over a week-end period.  In July the city is host to the Tour de White Rock bicycle road race which attracts international riders as well as locals.
