Therapy Berkeley, CA

Albany CA, Kensington CA, Emeryville, Orinda CA

Berkeley, CA is a small city in Northern California, set on the Eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. While the area was first inhabited by Native Americans, then Spanish settlers, followed by white Americans, it did not become an inhabited city until the building of the University of California in the 1870's. According to local lore, the trustees selected the name "Berkeley" after Bishop George Berkeley, who wrote verses, as well as sermons.1 Once construction began, houses were built around the campus and grew into a city.

Since the 19th century, Berkeley has grown into a small city, with a big reputation. In the Sixties, it was the center of the Counterculture movement, and although it is close to Oakland and San Francisco, maintains its own liberal character. Unfortunately, 41.3 % of the population earns less than $40,000 so there is a need for subsidized or low cost cognitive and family therapy.

Mental Health in Berkeley

In 2014, Berkley was home to the The 4th International Conference on Families with Parental Mental Health Challenges - Addressing the Needs of the Whole Family. Discussions convered;

  • The challenges of parenting for adults with psychiatric disability or mental health concerns
  • The impact and challenges for children & young people living in families with parental psychiatric disability or mental health concerns, including those associated with being a young carer 2

The City of Berkeley provides counseling for adults through its Family, Youth, and Children's Services (FYC) program.3 They are located on 2460 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, and provide counseling for adults, children, youth, and even have a Mobile Crisis Team that can be contacted in case of emergencies. Outpatient services are given between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday, and their phone number is (510) 981-5280. Services include individual, relationship, family, and youth counseling. On the weekends, you may contact the Crisis Response message center, and leave voice mail at (510) 981-5284.

Current Initiatives

Alameda County Health Care Services Agency has initiated the Center for Healthy Schools and Communities program. It is a school based health enterprise, with the goal of bringing emotional health to students, and recognize and treat conduct that prevents students from learning, and leading productive lives. Berkeley is part of the Berkeley Unified School District and participates in the program.4 To learn more about this program, contact The Alameda County Health Care Services Agency at (510) 667-7990.
