Brea California is located in Orange County and has been publically considered one of the best suburbs to reside in. The city is smaller than your average Southern Californian town, with a little over 35,000 residents.1 Regardless of its relatively meager population, Brea has much to offer. The Art in Public Places program is considered the pioneer in which many other like programs are modeled after nationwide. The program began in 1975 and today has over a hundred different pieces in all mediums.  Residents and visitors can take a self-guided tour. Community events in Brea also help support that suburbia appeal of this little Californian city. Such events include a Nutcracker Craft Boutique, a Spring Craft Boutique and concerts in the park during the July 4th holiday. The city also boasts a Family Resource Center that includes a place for recreation for children, adults, and seniors alike.

Mental Health in Brea

Although Brea is not considered a medically underserved community in California , the Brea Community Council is planning to expand healthcare coverage as part of its future goals for the City.2 In the meantime, City residents who cannot afford private therapy are able to obtain counseling from nonprofit groups and hospitals. People who have been newly diagnosed with a chronic illness can attend the Synergy Program sponsored by St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton. They present a feature of services, from nutritional guidance, to mind/body wellness, and advice on spirituality if the client seeks it.3

The Illumination Foundation is geared toward homeless adults and families. Adults can obtain a range of services: physical and mental health, job counseling, and housing assistance. Their mission is to give homeless individuals some stability and help them transform themselves into members of the community.4

Current Initiatives

Along with other counties, Orange County representatives attended the National Associations of Counties-Healthy Counties convention in San Diego (January 30-31 2014). The organization has stated their goal to be integrating current health and mental health programs to meet Affordable Healthcare Standards. Orange County, like others, knows that more organization is needed on the County level.5
