Although known primarily as a college town, Claremont, California is also a great place for families. Nestled in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles, the town boasts 23 parks within the city limits, offering recreational activities for all ages.1 Most offer playgrounds, family picnic areas, tennis courts, basketball courts, and soccer and baseball fields. The city itself offers a preschool program for children under age five, and summer day camps for school-age children and teenagers. A Youth Activity Center offers after-school activities, as well as a drop-in gathering place for community teenagers. The center also offers a variety of special events aimed at teenagers. Several times a year, the city sponsors special events for families, including an egg hunt in the spring, a May family festival, and a children’s concert series during the month of July. The city is also home to the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, which boasts the largest collection of fossilized footprints in the United States, as well as dinosaur eggs, skeletal casts of dinosaurs, and a variety of hands-on exhibits.

Mental Health in Claremont

Claremont, California is located close to the southern, coastal edge of California, though it is inland about sixty miles. The total population of this area is approximately 35,000 people. A little less than 83% of the population has been living in the same home for over a year, which creates a more stable environment, which can be helpful for people suffering from mental health problems. The average number of people living in a household is 2.57 and 8.6% of the population falls below poverty threshold.2 In addition, the city also has poor ratings for safety and schools are located high on the charts for suspension and expulsion rates over drug abuse and violencein fact, there is over a 6% suspension rate.3

These are just a few of the indicators that lead to mental illness in children and adults. Conditions like this can lead to depression, drug abuse, violence, paranoia, and overall poor mental health. Suicide and crimes are problems that are not unheard of in this area and, though the government and other organizations have taken steps to help the conditions, mental health issues are still a problem and cases are appearing more frequently. Mental illnesses are issues that need to be solved on an individual level as each case is unique in its own way.

Current Initiatives

The Pomona Valley affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI PV) is a non-profit organization committed to those who suffer from mental illness. This local chapter provides education, advocacy, and support for not only individuals who have the illness, but also for family members and the community as a whole. There are various resources available, such as a confidential information and referral helpline to help navigate the path to recovery. Call 909-399-0305 to access this helpline. There are classes that provide information on treatment, recovery, and advocacy for issues such as bipolar depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, which are often held at the NAMI Headquarters located at 462 North Indian Hill Boulevard, Claremont, California 91711. Through community outreach they are able to increase awareness and dispel myths and stigma surrounding mental illness. To connect with NAMI Pomona Valley, you may wish to join one of their monthly meetings. For dates and times or any other information, please call 909-399-0305.
