Menlo Park is located in San Mateo county on the west coast of California south of San Francisco with a population of just over 30,000 people. The city encompasses approximately 18 square miles and is located very close to Stanford University in Palo Alto. Google was originally founded in Menlo Park. Long ago this area was home to the Ohlone people. In 1854, this city got its name from two Irish immigrants who purchased a large amount of land for their private residences. In 1856, San Mateo County garnered its own separate status, and eventually led to the incorporation of Menlo Park as an official city in 1874.

Current Initiatives

Many people have a negative view of those who live with a mental illness or chemical dependency. In order to diminish these negative views, multiple initiatives have been instituted in the Menlo Park Area. Stamp Out Stigma is a unique program that invites those with mental illnesses to share their experiences with the community. These community panels give community members an opportunity to learn about mental illness and see how successful those with mental illness can be in life.4 Stigma Free San Mateo County is another mental health initiative that seeks to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Stigma can often prevent people from seeking help when they need it most. The initiative includes community outreach programs that educate the public about mental illness and substance abuse.5
