Located within two hours of many key locations in California, Modesto is the county seat of Stanislaus County.  Yosemite National Park, Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Jose are within 110 miles.  Due to the proximity of these other cities, over 20 percent of the population commutes outside the county to work.   Founded in 1870, the city was originally a stop on the railroad between Sacramento and Los Angeles.  The city was to be named for William C.
