Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Dana Point

The city of Dana Point has pooled resources into developing community services in the last decade; as a consequence, funding for social and public facilities has risen. However, in comparison to the rest of Orange County and California, Dana Point is a lower-income city with nearly 30% of its population falling under the age of 18.2 Like many other psychological issues that exist in low-income communities, marriage and family related mental health issues are prevalent within the population of Dana Point. Couples report loss of intimacy and financial issues as the leading causes of mental health issues. Of the nearly 60% married population, 40% of them have children under the age of 18 to support, yet have an insufficient annual income. A lack of affordable childrens education facilities is another reason why parents find themselves experiencing depression and anxiety.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

A great program which calls the public into action is the Trauma Intervention Programs, Inc (TIP). This program requests that regular citizens become trained as lay support workers. They will be called upon in the event of an emergency or city wide trauma. No experience is necessary. The primary tasks that these modern-day Good Samaritans will be called to perform in emergency situations are to comfort families after the death or sudden illness of a loved one, support family members after the suicide of a loved one, help emotionally traumatized victims of accidents, provide emotional and practical support to those who have been robbed, burglarized, or assaulted, help disoriented older persons, help those emotionally shaken by any crisis event, and care for those dying alone.
