Perched along the Pacific Ocean, Huntington Beach offers many beach and surf activities. The four beaches in the city face in different directions: west, northwest, south, and southwest. The western-facing beach contains The Cliffs or Dog Beach. The names are derived from the cliffs where dogs are allowed. During the winter, this area offers great opportunities for surfing. During high tide, the beach here will be almost completely submerged. The pier is the dividing line determining the beach areas. North of the pier is considered to be the southwest beaches. South of the pier lies Huntington State Beach and this stretch of beach faces almost due south. The state beach offers fishing, good surf, volleyball courts, bathrooms and fire-rings for bonfires. Day use requires a modest parking fee. Surfing around the pier is challenging due to the currents and sandbars. Kite surfing is also popular and can be viewed just northwest of the pier.1
