Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Laguna Niguel
Married couples and their families make up 58.5% of the households in Laguna Niguel. Of those 14,147 married households, 5,889 have children under 18 years old.2 Todays parents and teenagers struggle increasingly with suicidal ideation and these thoughts of self-harm can affect the entire family. In fact, one in five teens considers suicide before adulthood. Parents who are faced with the aftermath of teen suicide express feelings of shock, anger, guilt, and depression. This can cause parents to express suicidal ideation themselves.
The City of Laguna Niguel takes these statistics seriously, as do the parents of teenagers in the area. In addition to offering occasional workshops to help parents and teens, the city is now asking for citizens to help with their new Trauma Intervention Program.3 Training will be provided, so no experience is necessary. Emergency response personnel will call these volunteers to the scene in order to comfort families after a sudden death, support survivors after the suicide of a loved one, and help those traumatized by accidents. Those interested in volunteering for TIP can call 714-314-0744.4
Family Services and Assistance Programs
The City of Laguna Niguel partners with several organizations to educate parents and raise awareness of teen suicide. One of those organizations is Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services. The Orange County Center serves the entire county, including Laguna Niguel. Didi Hirsch provides a 24/7 suicide prevention crisis line that can be reached at 877-727-4747. This hotline is staffed entirely by volunteers, so those who would like to lend a helping hand can call 310-751-5353 for volunteer information.5
