Modesto is home to many sports activities. As the home of the Coca Cola Modesto Relays and it predecessors, more track and field records have been set in Modesto than any other city in the world. Cornelius Warmerdam set the first record in Modesto in 1942 in the pole vault competition. There is a high-A minor league baseball team in the city as well. For many years, the team was an affiliate of the Oakland A's. During that time, baseball greats Reggie Jackson, Joe Morgan, and Rickey Henderson got their start with the team. Successful baseball managers have also spent time in the town. Tony La Russa and Sparky Anderson have coached with the team. Today the team is known at the Modesto Nuts and is a member of the California League as a farm team for the Colorado Rockies. The team plays home games at John Thurman Field.
