Newport Beach has a rich and long history. Before European explorers came to the area, various Indian tribes occupied it. However, as word of its abundance of land and resources spread, settlers flooded to the area, especially in the 1800s. One-acre plots of land were sold for just $1.00. The city's population exploded after 1870, when it was discovered that the harbor could be easily navigated by ships. In fact, the city gets it's name from the New Port that was discovered as part of this process. The city continued to grow throughout the 1900s and today is home to over 85,000 people.1

Couples who have children can find themselves disagreeing over parenting methods, educational programs and other important aspects of raising a child. This, in turn, can cause stress and anxiety that puts undue pressure on the relationship. For parents who find themselves in this situation, Newport Beach offers many parenting classes that help guide and direct parents toward a more cooperative relationship. The LEAPS project is just one option for parents. LEAPS is an early childhood education readiness program offered by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Parenting young children, nutrition, language development, and social-emotional development are just a few topics parents can learn about in the LEAPS program. Parents who wish to instill community-mindedness in their children can sign them up for participation in one of the YMCA's service learning projects. The Y's projects give kids a chance to learn about important community issues and take action to address those issues. By making positive changes to the community, kids gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of civic responsibility. Additionally, kids acquire problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and leadership skills that will prove valuable assets as they work their way through secondary school and onto college or the workplace. For information about the YMCA's service programs, call 714-549-9622.3
