Agriculture was the most prosperous industry in Palmdale until the government put in Muroc Air Base after WWII, which was later renamed Edwards Air Force Base.1 The base expanded in the 1950s, establishing an aerospace industry, where aircraft were developed and tested. This testing facility was called the United States Air Force Plant 42. Lockheed followed suit by establishing a plant. This gave way for the aerospace industry to take over as the largest industry in the area. The area is currently known as the Aerospace Capital of the World. It wasn't until the 1970s when Palmdale began to become more heavily developed, complete with an airport, municipal building, and even a library. The population of Palmdale has steadily increased, to its robust residency of around 153,000. With ample freeways to and from the Los Angeles area, Palmdale is the perfect place to call home.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Palmdale

Couples in Palmdale and the Antelope Valley experience many health-related stressors that can lead to dissatisfaction in the relationship. In addition to more domestic abuse and psychiatric emergencies than any other area of Los Angeles County, Palmdale also experiences high rates of tobacco use and obesity. Many people in rural areas outside Palmdale have difficulty getting the treatment they need, simply because of the travel time required to get to a mental health facility. To improve access to care, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health has joined forces with the Department of Mental Health to develop several health initiatives. Among them is an initiative to integrate and coordinate health and mental health care at local agencies throughout the Antelope Valley.2

Palmdale couples who need assistance with mental health concerns can turn to Mental Health America Los Angeles (MHA). MHA operates the Antelope Valley Enrichment Services, which seeks to ensure that people living with mental illness have access to the services they need in order to improve couples and family functioning and become active members of the community. The focus of MHA's programs is on education and training so clients develop self-confidence, dignity, and self-reliance. Further information about MHA's programs is available by calling 661-726-2850.3
