Salinas hosts different annual attractions including the California Rodeo, California International Airshow, and the world famous Steinbeck Festival. Salinas is a major stop on the California Rodeo tour. This tradition started back in 1911 as a Wild West Show on the grounds of the old Salinas Sports Complex. It is held in July, where there is the traditional rodeo competitions and bull riding, but there is also cowboy poetry, wine tasting, a carnival, barbecues, and a cowboy gala ball where couples come to celebrate their marriage. The Steinbeck Festival combines different happenings such as a street fair, discussions on Steinbeck, and films. This festival has been occurring for the past 20 years and is held annually. The festival began when the Steinbeck Library received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in an effort to explore the influence of the West on film and literature. The festival has been thriving ever since.1
