San Jose is home to such companies as Adobe Systems, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and eBay.1 With such technical giants, it is no wonder it is an affluent area of the United States with a relatively low unemployment. Part of the low unemployment rate is because of the proximity of quality four-year universities, such as Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, and Stanford University, which is considered an Ivy League equivalent school. To match the brilliant students at these universities, San Jose also has more patents produced than any other city. The cost of living in San Jose is also one if the highest in California, as well as the nation, with housing costs contributing to the majority of the reasons for the high cost of living. Interestingly though, the residents of San Jose are rated as having some of the highest levels of disposable income, despite the high cost of living.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in San Jose

Although reports of domestic violence in Santa Clara County are lower today than they were a few years ago, nearly 11 percent of the county's residents report having been hurt by a spouse or intimate partner in some way.2 Fortunately, victims of domestic violence can seek assistance from the numerous programs offered in the area. Since minorities are generally underserved when it comes to mental health services,3 mental health practitioners at public and private agencies must work diligently to ensure that everyone who requires mental health care has access to it. To find local providers of behavioral health services, please view the listing on this page.

The Santa Clara chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) works to reduce the stigma of living with a behavioral health issue. NAMI Santa Clara provides outreach, education, and advocacy programs, and promotes research to improve the accessibility and quality of mental health services in the San Jose area. The organization also provides valuable information for individuals in crisis, people looking for support groups, and family-related educational courses. Further information about NAMI Santa Clara is available by calling 408-453-0400.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Santa Clara County Mental Health Department provides comprehensive community mental health services to thousands of families each year. The department's programs are developed in a culturally sensitive manner and are delivered in a number of languages commonly spoken in San Jose and the surrounding areas. Programs help families overcome depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and severe mental illnesses in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Care is also provided for the homeless and those involved in the criminal justice system. Call the county mental health call center at 1-800-704-0900 for more information.5
