Some of the local attractions in Santa Rosa include the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Redwood Empire Ice Arena, Annadel State Park, and the Spring Lake Regional Park. The Redwood Empire Ice Arena was once owned by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz. It is still currently the host of the annual Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament where 64 teams from all over the world compete. There are also peanuts figurines around the grounds, including a gift shop and the museum is across the street. Annadel State Park is 5,000 acres, offering many recreational activities. The different rock formations were created from volcanic activity as well as some mining for cobblestone in the early 1900s.1

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Santa Rosa

In recent years, a primary issue facing couples and families in Sonoma County has been homelessness, where between 2009 and 2011, the number of people without a home increased by 40 percent. Many couples and families find themselves on the street due to job loss, drug, or alcohol addiction, or because of a major family conflict. Homeless individuals often face discrimination, and find access to mental health services difficult.2

Santa Rosa families who have an elderly family member can turn to the Sonoma County Department of Adult and Aging Services for many resources. Elderly residents can get in-home care as part of the In-Home Supportive Services program. The Linkages program helps older family members coordinate services that allow them to remain as self-sufficient and independent as possible. The Agency on Aging also provides outreach and advocacy programs to educate the community on elder care issues. For more information about Adult and Aging Services, call 707-565-5900.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

LifeWorks of Sonoma County is a family services organization that provides many programs of care for families in need of support services. LifeWorks oversees school-based, in-home, and community-based programs. Choices for Change is a prevention education program that teaches children and families about the risks associated with drug use. Emotionally challenged children can receive services as part of LifeWorks' School-Based Counseling Program. Behavioral programs are available for families with children who have a severe behavior problem. Additional programs seek to reach at-risk youth, and provide transition services for children who have Asperger's Syndrome and nonverbal learning disabilities. More information about LifeWorks' services is available by calling 707-568-2300.3
