South Florida is one of the hot spots within the United States for family vacation, cruises, and spring break. Here you will find a lot more than just a white sandy beach and a surplus of sun. There are multiple attractions great for children and teenagers of all ages. This region of the state consists of everything from Miami to the Keys. Anyone wishing to rent a boat to get out in the great waters and create lasting family memories can stop by Fast Track. Other great activities revolve around scuba diving (South Beach Divers) and snorkeling (Eco-Adventure). Both prove to be highly entertaining for children, teenagers, and adult family members. The MetroZoo is also nearby with over nine hundred animals. This site is extremely unique in its offering of night tours. However, if you prefer adventure be sure to check out Parrot Jungle Island.1 Here you will find wildlife, waterslides, and much more. In terms of education, there are more schools in this area than one could even begin to imagine; Riviera Middle, Hope Academy, and Joe Hall Elementary are a few of the options nearby.

Mental Health in South Florida

When someone is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, they face an uphill struggle, and need a lot of support. Issues centered around this physically debilitating illness can cause anxiety and other mental health problems. Numerous support groups exist in South Florida, including groups in Coral Gables, St. Lucie and others. The St. Lucie support group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 3700 Southeast Jennings Road. For more information, call 772-201-6007.2

Severe gluten intolerance and allergies are a rapidly-growing health problem for millions of people. Understanding and support around these dietary issues is vitally important, as more people become aware of the debilitating effects of Celiac disease and severe gluten intolerance. The South Florida Celiac Support Group meets to discuss issues surrounding these dietary issues, and to talk about delicious gluten-free food. More information can be found by calling 561-637-0396.3

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It's a disease of the nerves that effects motor control. Although it is rare, it is a severe illness for those who contract it, and individuals suffering from ALS, as well as their friends and family need support. Numerous support groups are offered throughout South Florida.4

Local Initiatives

The Florida Diversity Council is a non-profit that works on education and advocacy for issues surrounding diversity and inclusion. Their Youth Empowerment Summit is a free youth meeting that connects youth with leadership training, volunteer organizations, and mentors. College planning and future employment topics are covered as well. The Council has chapters around the state, including the South Florida area.5
