Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Des Moines

Providing for the safety of children, as well as strengthening and maintaining families, are the primary goals of Children and Families of Iowa. Abuse and neglect do not necessarily have to tear families apart. With the proper supports in place, many families can overcome such traumas to restore hope for a brighter future as a loving and caring family. Skill-building services are offered for families with a child that has an emotional or behavioral disorder. Support programs are also available for relatives responsible for the care of another relative's child, as well as for foster and adoptive parents. Additionally, safety planning services are provided so families have a clear procedure for handling a crisis situation in an effective and healthy manner. Many more services are available. When one member of a family struggles with addiction, it impacts everyone else. Oftentimes, families may not know how to best help their loved one overcome their dependence on substances. The family support group offered by United Community Services seeks to provide support as well as valuable information about addiction and recovery to relatives of an addict. The four-week group helps members understand their feelings and cope with the anger, frustration and confusion that can often be encountered when a loved one is using. The group is offered at no cost. Please call 515-280-3860 for information.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Families that have lost their homes can find themselves in that situation because of job loss, addiction or some other serious issue that negatively impacts the mental health of one or more members of the family. Fortunately, two Des Moines organizations help meet the needs of these families by providing a wide range of assistance programs. The Salvation Army offers emergency food, including baby formula, so families have the nutrition they need to meet life's other challenges. Funding for food, clothing, rent and utility payments is also available so families can reestablish themselves.4 Homeless families with children, or children who are on their own, can take advantage of assistance programs offered by Youth and Shelter Services. In addition to shelter, food and material support, the agency strives to provide youth with the knowledge and skills they need to live independently and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.5 Contact Youth and Shelter Services at 515-233-3141 or the Salvation Army at 515-282-3422 to find out more about these organizations.
