I like to approach psychotherapy from a “depth orientation.” In this sense we look below the surface of the symptoms and include perspectives of perennial philosophy and techniques of the likes of Freud, Jung, and James Hillman. Sometimes we may look to literature to find a fresh vantage point on our own predicaments. Psychotherapy literally means to attend to and take care of the animating breath or spirit of the physical body. We often feel angst because we have not attended to this deeper, core aspect of ourselves; perhaps we never learned how to. Through the process of psychotherapy we learn to be in service of our deeper selves.
