Bethesda, Maryland is a town consisting of multiple attractions including theaters, bowling alleys, museums, and much more. Here you are sure to find something for the entire family to enjoy, including a day seeing a family-friendly film at Bethesda Row Cinema or Montgomery Mall Cinemas. Both locations provide multiple viewing as well as concessions to meet your movie-going needs. Another attraction great for children and religious families is Ratner Museum, which has an art and literature museum specifically geared toward children. Furthermore, you can take a stroll through the Biblical world with the self-guided tour book.1 The Kid's Moving Company is great for children as well as young teenagers and has multiple classes focused on significant developmental stages of childhood, including motor, balance, coordination, and much more. To meet your educational needs, Bannockburn Elementary and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High are two public schools at your disposal.

Marriage and Family Mental Health in Bethesda

The primary mission of the National Center for Children and Families is to facilitate strong family functioning in order to reduce the need for child welfare services in the lives of Bethesda area families. The agency offers the Nurturing Parent Program, which provides courses to parents, grandparents, and other caregivers regarding child development, nutrition, effective communication, and positive discipline strategies. Recognizing the importance of an involved father-figure, the agency also offers a Men in Motion group, which helps dads develop parenting skills that support his positive interactions with his kids. Contact the center at 301-365-4480 for more detailed information.2

Parenting can be a challenge for even the most well equipped adults. However, being a teen parent presents many more obstacles, especially if the teen is in the foster care system herself. The Bright Futures program offered by Family Matters of Washington, D.C. helps these expecting and single teen moms navigate the process of caring for a child. Girls participate in programs that help them develop daily living skills that support and nurture their baby's physical and mental health. Participants also engage in educational programs that keep them on track to receive their high school equivalency or high school diploma. Vocational programs are offered as well, to ensure young mothers have the skills to procure employment. These services are provided at no cost. Additional information is available by calling 202-289-1510.3

The Youth and Family Services Department at the YMCA provides services to at-risk youth in the Bethesda area that support their social and emotional growth. Children who have witnessed violence, are poor, have moved from school to school, or who have just arrived in the country comprise the majority of participants in the YMCA's programs. Children learn effective coping skills to overcome the many obstacles they face in their daily lives. Social skills programs prepare kids to have positive interactions with one another and with caring adults. Educational programs also benefit participants by providing homework help, tutoring, and language classes for non-native English speakers. Call the YMCA at 301-587-5700 to find out more.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Each member of the family can receive support services through the Jewish Social Service Agency. Social programs for the elderly help facilitate connections with other seniors and ease the transition into the golden years. The agency also offers early childhood intervention programs that identify potential social, emotional, or physical delays. The Jewish Social Service Agency serves adults and couples as well. The divorce and separation program helps couples identify common ground in an effort to increase cooperation and reduce the negative impact their breakup has on their children. Many other programs are available. Call 301-838-4200 for additional details.5
