The primary mission of the National Center for Children and Families is to facilitate strong family functioning in order to reduce the need for child welfare services in the lives of Bethesda area families. Participants also engage in educational programs that keep them on track to receive their high school equivalency or high school diploma. Vocational programs are offered as well, to ensure young mothers have the skills to procure employment. These services are provided at no cost. The Youth and Family Services Department at the YMCA provides services to at-risk youth in the Bethesda area that support their social and emotional growth. Children who have witnessed violence, are poor, have moved from school to school, or who have just arrived in the country comprise the majority of participants in the YMCA's programs. Children learn effective coping skills to overcome the many obstacles they face in their daily lives. Social skills programs prepare kids to have positive interactions with one another and with caring adults.
