The building was built in the 1930s during the Great Depression and replaced the old capitol building that burned down to the ground. The grounds of the capitol building also include a library, the Governor's residence, office buildings, and the Liberty Memorial Building.1 Bismarck is also home of the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, providing houses for the homeless. The city is unique in that Bismarck's biggest shopping center is located directly downtown, rather than in the suburbs, where they are usually located. There are also other major retail stores in Bismarck that are located near the mall. There are other malls located around the city, with the newest mall being considered a power center mall. The historic district has some homes that date back to the 1880s with a great Cathedral located within the neighborhood.
