The established town of Hamilton in the early 1800s had roads and streets on a grid pattern designated as East or West and North or South. In the mid to late 1800s prominent establishments came about with the Grand Lodge of Canada, a public library, the Right House department store, the first commercial telephone service in Canada, the first telephone exchange in the British Empire and the second telephone exchange in North America.
