Markham was mostly farmland and marsh prior to the 1970s.  The Markham Fair that is held each year reflecting its rich historic past.  With becoming the High Tech Capital of Canada, there is a sufficiently large endeavor towards new building construction occurring in the downtown area.  The town is fairly diverse with a large Chinese population. The city also has a lot of different venues for performing arts, such as the Markham Little Theatre.  This theatre has been in existence for 40 years, presenting over 100 plays during that time.  The Youth Theatre is completely run and organized by the youth in the area.  Many have reported this area as being one of the best places to live in Canada.  The economy is made up of distilleries and breweries, and the high tech industry.  The town also has an economic and cultural cooperation agreement with the city of Laval, Quebec.

The different attractions in Markham include the historic area where the Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery is located, the Mount Joy Schoolhouse which was built in 1907, the Heintzman house, which was the former home of Colonel George Crookshank, Sam Francis and Charles Heintzman, who was a piano manufacturer. There are also farms that are in operation such as the Devonshire Stables & Country Bumpkins Pony Farm, Forsythe Family Farms and a few others.  The Markham GO Station was built in 1871 and restored in 2000.  The Locust Hill Station, which was built in 1936, has been relocated to the grounds of the city Museum.¹ The Unionville Station, also built in 1871, has been restored and made into a community center. Some of the annual events that occur here include the Youth Festival, Unionville Festival, Ribfest & Music Festival, along with several other festivals throughout the year.

The divorce and separation rate in Markham is lower than that of Toronto and other larger cities; a reason for this is the large South-east Asian (particularly Chinese and Taiwanese) immigrant population.² Marriage demographics around Canada suggest that towns inhabited by migrant-descent families have lower domestic abuse and divorce rates. Family Services and Assistance Programs

An imminent, not-for-profit mental health initiative has been taken by the Family Service Ontario. Family Services York Region (FSYR) is a professional counselling organization that extends it services to people of all ages and ethnicities.⁴ They specialize in couples counseling, family counseling and �youth'. The organization refrains from using the term �counseling' when referring to youth mental health issues. Their aim is to allow adolescents and children to work through disorders that impact their performance as individuals. Students and children may seek help to work through issues of bullying, sexual orientation, family relationships and more. Children undergoing family therapy with parents may also take up individual sessions to better discuss their problems.
