The Ontario city of Sault Ste Marie is a diverse community. This is reflected in the many programs and facilities offered to the public. The Art Gallery of Algoma is a good place to start. Enjoy a coffee on the waterfront at the Minutia coffee bar at the gallery. After that, look for upcoming exhibits which are changed out periodically. Menopause is an emotionally heightened phase, which without the kindred support of the family, can prove ever devastating; with Christian marriage counselling, however, this change of life can be a more fluid transition.  Couples therapy will provide the support needed to maintain familial integrity during this trying time. Permanent collections are also available for viewing, such as the Elsie Savoie Sculpture Park. Here, unique metal and concrete structures inspire and intrigue the minds of gallery visitors while they enjoy the outside fresh air. A gift shop can be browsed after a visit to find a unique souvenir to take home as a memento of an afternoon spent immersed in art.1 The summer festival, RotaryFest is held every year and brings a large celebration to Clergue Park. Highlighted by the  beauty of Saint Mary’s River, the celebration includes carnival rides, face painting, and other festival activities.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste. Marie got its name from its cascading and rapidly flowing river. The name roughly translates to Saint Mary's rapids."1 The beautiful river isn't the only thing that's tumultuous, though. Most of the residents, 68.1 percent in fact, are married. Many of these couples have tumultuous relations due to addictions. One of the most common addictions, especially for men, is gambling. Gambling addictions take their toll on a marriage, because it affects finances, relationships and often occurs with other addictions, such as alcoholism.2

The Sault Area Hospital recognizes the toll that gambling has on families. A wide range of counseling services are available to those who are suffering from addiction. The service components include individual therapy, group therapy, couples counseling, family counseling, education, awareness, relapse prevention, and more. A multi-modal approach to care is used, including a 12-step abstinence based program, to help gambling addicts achieve success in overcoming their challenges. The addictions clinic can be reached at 705-759-6684.3 Additionally, the Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline is available to all people living in Ontario and can be reached at 1-888-230-3505.

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Sault Area Hospital offers a problem-gambling group called the Ontario Resource Group on Problem Gambling and Older Adults. The group provides strategies for mental health providers to assist their clients with addictions treatment by providing valuable resources, guidelines for best practices and enhanced access for older gambling addicts. The organization makes resource kits available to garner public awareness for the gambling problem in older adults to make others aware of how families are affected. For resource kits or more information, contact 705-759-3434, and ask for the problem gambling group resource coordinator.4
