There are lots of great things to do in Memphis. For those who prefer outdoor activities, there are several popular destinations. One of the most frequented is the zoo, which holds 3000 animals on its 70 acres. This is a great treat for children, and very family friendly. Another popular area is the Mississippi River, which runs right through the city. This enormous river is the second largest in the United States and is a main thoroughfare for barges carrying grain and other cargo. There are many public parks on the banks of the Mississippi that provide beautiful locations for spending a day sunning on the river's beach or swimming in the gently flowing water. If you're the flower type, you should also consider visiting the Botanical Garden with its 23 specialty gardens.1
Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Memphis
Child Protective Services works diligently with parents to resolve issues that have separated them from their children. Family discord can cause a myriad of mental health issues, which may require intervention. Nearly 10 percent of domestic cases involve children suffering abuse at the hands of a parent.2 While domestic violence is still a major issue for Memphis, as well as the state of Tennessee, things are improving.
The city of Memphis takes an active role in helping area youth reach their full potential. The Memphis Ambassadors Program (MAP) provides enrichment opportunities for children in grades 10 to 12. Through community, business, and neighborhood alliances, student members participate in educational activities that promote good health, civic responsibility, and employment skills. Members actively engage in leadership development and post-secondary education preparation. Life skills trainings, such as financial literacy, are offered as well. Call 901-636-6264 for further details.3
Family Services and Assistance Programs
Families dealing with grief, loss, mental illness, substance abuse, and other common mental health issues can turn to Jewish Family Service for assistance. Counseling for individuals, couples, and families is offered, as is specialized care for autistic spectrum disorders, anxiety, and depression. For children, play therapy programs help clients work through difficult issues in the context of play. As a United Way partner agency, Jewish Family Services provides assistance to those in need without discrimination. Further information may be obtained by calling 901-767-8511.4
