About Garland, TX

A suburb of Dallas, Garland, Texas is a city of well over 200,000 people.  The town started as part of the Peters colony.  W.S. Peters developed a large area for families to settle.  The land consisted of vast acreage of wildflowers and some bands of Native Americans.  The first residents arrived in 1850 but the area did not resemble a community until the 1870’s as a store and eventually, a mill, were erected.  When the mill was built along the banks of Duck Creek, the town was named.  Upon the arrival of the Santa Fe railroad in 1886 a short distance away, a rivalry erupted.  In recent years, a counselor Garland, TX became a popular profession for recent college graduates to pursue.  With the train, came a depot which lured residents of Duck Creek to the new town of Embree.  They took the post office with them.  The competition between the towns continued for many years until a county judge had to move the post office between the two towns and the name Garland was bestowed upon it. 

Recent growth in the city is from several new developments.  Once home to a Wet ‘n’ Wild water park (which closed in the 1990’s), the city again boasts a water amusement park.  Hawaiian Falls opened in 2003 and is a major attraction.  With water slides, a wave pool and children’s play area, the park is a great family destination.  Season passes are available for people who want to visit regularly during the operating season.  The south side of town is home to a Bass Pro Shop.  The store opened in 2006 and is a great place to stock up on all things fishing and outdoors related.  The Garland Independent School District recently opened their Special Events Center.  You can locate a Christian counselor Garland, TX within the city limits as well as therapists practicing in the surrounding areas.  The multi-purpose space of the Events Center can host commencement ceremonies, concerts and athletic events.  There is also banquet and meeting space available for rent.  Firewheel Town Center is a new shopping center that has retailers, restaurants and a movie theater.
