About Grand Prairie, TX

Grand Prairie crosses over three different counties—Dallas, Ellis, and Tarrant counties.  The city was incorporated in 1909.  However, the town was first established in 1863 as Dechman.  Alexander Dechman traded his oxen and wagons for land in Dallas County and subsequently purchased 239 ½ acres on the east side of the river and 100 acres of wooded land on the west side of the river—all for a broken wagon, an oxen team, and $200 in Confederate money.  In 1876 Dechman traded half of his prairie property to T&P Railroad which prompted the railroad to name the station after him.  If you are a counselor Grand Prairie, TX you may find a variety of cultural considerations as you help individuals and families go through life adjustments.  The name of the town was changed in 1877 to Grand Prairie.  The legend for the renaming of the town was due to an actress who got off the train and said that it was a “grand prairie”.  However, that has not been proven.
