Grand Prairie crosses over three different counties—Dallas, Ellis, and Tarrant counties. The city was incorporated in 1909. However, the town was first established in 1863 as Dechman. Alexander Dechman traded his oxen and wagons for land in Dallas County and subsequently purchased 239 ½ acres on the east side of the river and 100 acres of wooded land on the west side of the river—all for a broken wagon, an oxen team, and $200 in Confederate money.
