Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Dallas

Employment and homelessness is a common issue that can be faced by couples and families. Domestic violence is reported to be the cause of homelessness for 27 percent of individuals living on the streets in Dallas.2 Many of those people are children who have escaped an abusive home. Fortunately, several Dallas area organizations work to ensure that those who do not have a permanent home have places to turn for food, clothing, shelter, and other support services.

The Dallas Senior Services Program serves as an outreach and advocacy liaison to the City of Dallas, and provides input on issues important to seniors. The agency works to provide resources and referral services to seniors that involve issues regarding maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The agency offers to build wheelchair ramps at the homes of elderly city residents to provide easier access as they age. Furthermore, the agency acts on behalf of the elderly to ensure abuse, neglect, and exploitation do not occur. Additional information about the Senior Services Program is available by calling 214-670-4894.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Family Services program offered by the Catholic Charities of Dallas provides comprehensive support services for underserved populations. Working specifically with the poor, the elderly, and immigrants, the program offers assistance with paying rent and utilities, provides school supplies for children, and distributes heaters, fans, and air conditioners to make living conditions more comfortable. Additionally, the program includes a food pantry where families who do not have enough money to purchase food can receive the ingredients needed to make nutritious meals. For further details, please call the Family Services Center at 214-389-1340.4
