Grand Prairie is proud of their city and offers many fun activities that are available. The city cites five reasons to visit the city: the residents are the friendliest people in Texas; there are affordable accommodations; easy access to the airport; great family attractions; and fun shopping and good food. Splash Factory is sure to attract those with families located at the Charley Taylor Recreation Center. There are waterfalls, water gun play areas, and a power geyser.1 Other attractions are Louis Tussaud's Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe It or Not! and Ripley's Enchanted Mirror Maze. The museum is open year round. Some of the wax figures include Hollywood people, historical figures, people from the Old West, horror, childhood fantasy, and the life of Christ. The mirror maze is 3,000 square feet of mirrored paths, with dead ends, surprising corners, and continuous circles. It's definitely a fun time for the whole family!

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Grand Prairie

A variety of issues can lead to diminished family functioning, including the presence of mental illness, chemical dependency, poor communication, and children who act out. The Catholic Charities of Fort Worth offers a Families First program that helps families overcome these issues and strengthen their relationships, reduce risk factors, and reduce stress in the family environment. Free assessment, parenting classes and support services are provided. Call 817-534-0814 for more details.2

The way in which children develop coping strategies to deal with life's challenges is greatly impacted by the presence of their father. The Fatherhood Coalition of Tarrant County seeks to help fathers be responsible, positive role models for their children. This goal is achieved by providing a variety of resources, including educational materials, fatherhood support services and yearly training conferences that offer valuable knowledge to help improve parenting skills for dads.3

Remaining independent and self-sufficient as one ages can be challenging if support services are not readily available. Fortunately, older adults in Grand Prairie can turn to Meals on Wheels to provide them with the support they need to continue to live in their own home. Not only does Meals on Wheels deliver nutritious meals to elderly homebound residents, they also offer assessment services to determine the need for mental health programs of support. These programs are then coordinated by a case manager who facilitates communication with other service agencies to ensure each client lives in a safe and healthy environment. More details are available by calling 817-336-0912.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Rush Creek Compassion Center offers several assistance programs that help families meet their physical, emotional and mental health needs. The food pantry provides free, nutritious food so families can use their limited incomes on things other than meals and focus their energy on maintaining healthy relationships with one another. Adult education classes provide valuable information about how to function effectively as a family, even in the face of tough times. Additional classes emphasize the importance of budgeting, and provide guidance for finding employment so parents have the means to provide for their families. After school programs teach children responsibility, honesty, time management, communication and other valuable life skills. For additional information, call 817-468-7729.5
