Houston, nicknamed Space City, was founded in 1836 and is now the fourth largest city in the United States with a population of 5 million. Its history has been turbulent since significant oil discoveries in 1901, when Houston became the oil and gas capital of the world. Then in 1973 NASA established its space center and the population surged. The 1980s saw a world-wide oil recession which caused Houston to diversify into aerospace and biotechnology in the 1990s. If you are visiting Houston with your family, be sure to make a trip to the Southern part of the city to visit the NASA center.1 Set aside an entire day as there is much to see for children and couples alike.
Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Houston
As one of the largest centers of business in Texas and the surrounding states, and the core of a rapidly evolving system of suburbs, Houston is home to thousands of families. Sometimes families are torn apart because of domestic violence. Houston sees tens of thousands of domestic violence incidents each year, with even more reported in Harris County.2 Because of this, there is a great need for family oriented mental health services in this thriving metropolis.
For those who are dealing with mental health issues within their marriage, Houston area organizations offer a variety of free and low cost services. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is one such service provider. Programs offered by Catholic Charities include couples counseling, pre-marital counseling, and classes for families who are adjusting to separation or divorce. To learn more about these important services, call 1-866-649-5862.3
Family Services and Assistance Programs
For parents seeking ways to better improve the mental health of their children and family, counseling and parental training classes are a great place to start. The Thread Alliance is one of many organizations in the Houston area that offer these types of services. The Thread Alliance exists to end the cycle of child abuse and the mental health issues surrounding it in order to get families back on track to healthy living. They do this through parenting classes, prevention education, and treatment for those affected by child abuse. To learn more about these lifesaving services, contact the Thread Alliance at 281-937-2612.4
