Victoria, Texas is a beautiful historic town with family attractions of all types. For families seeking to obtain an educational experience, visit the Memorial Square in honor of the war in the 1800s. This site also features three monuments in honor of those who defended their states. The Museum of Coastal Bend Victoria is located on the college campus and features multiple exhibits, including historical artifacts, photographs, and even cannons. Here you will get a better understanding of the earliest settlers of the state. A great attraction for children and teenagers, as well as adult family members is the Texas Zoo. This zoo hosts many animals from around the world in a simulated natural habitat proving to be great for the entire family.1 The city only has one movie theatre, Victoria Cinemark, which hosts several newly released films, updating weekly. There are multiple public school options within the city including Crain Middle School and Guadalupe Elementary School.

Two activity centers in the city offer one hot meal a day for adults over the age of 60. Individuals who are homebound can sign up for home meal service as well. Transportation services provide safe travel to medical appointments, the grocery store, and for other errands around town. Additionally, many social and recreational events are offered each month. The Youth Indicated Services Program is a drug and alcohol prevention program offered by Mid-Coast Family Services to school districts throughout the Victoria area. The primary goal of the program is to educate youth who are at-risk of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as other high-risk behaviors. Small groups of students engage in a 12-week intervention and prevention curriculum that teaches them healthy coping skills, effective communication strategies, improves decision-making skills, and teaches self-control. By equipping youth knowledge and skills, they are able to make better decisions and resist peer pressure to engage in unhealthy behaviors. Additional details are available by calling 361-575-7842.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing low-income families with quality, affordable and comfortable housing that in turn enhances family and community functioning. Generous donations from local residents, civics groups and corporations provide the materials and manpower to build each house. Habitat families also get involved in the process of constructing the home by providing sweat equity. By providing affordable homeownership, Habitat helps break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, allowing families to focus instead on personal growth, financial stability and job security. Call 361-573-2511 to find out more.5
