Mental Health in Laramie

Through the help of many different organizations, Laramie has seen an increase in the awareness people have about mental health and the impact it can have on people's lives. The Wyoming Community Foundation has helped many people come to a better understanding about mental illness, why it is important that they be treated, and what steps can be taken to prevent mental illness from becoming an even larger problem in this area and across the state of Wyoming.2

With the University of Wyoming located in Laramie, there are thousands of college-age residents who often deal with mental health issues, including, but not limited to, alcohol and drug dependency, depression and anxiety. Students at the University of Wyoming can visit the University Counseling Center to receive free mental health care. The Counseling Center offers individual, group and couples counseling, suicide prevention resources, and drug and alcohol treatment. Current Education

The University of Wyoming offers several mental health related programs for individuals who seek to work as a school counselor, mental health counselor, or in academia. There are two master's degree options and a PhD program as well. The Department of Professional Studies boasts small class sizes and faculty that are highly trained. All of the department's programs seek to build understanding of oneself, provide research-based competencies, and help develop divergent thinking.4 The University's facilities include the Counselor Education Training Clinic, as well as the Rocky Mountain Institute for Play Therapy Studies, which is one of the only U.S. centers for play therapy approved by the Association for Play Therapy.5 To obtain about more information about these programs, call 307-766-5649.
