Burbank, located north of Los Angeles, has a population of around 100,000 people and is considered the Media Capital of the World.1 There are many different media and entertainment companies that are headquartered in Burbank, such as Nickelodeon, PBS, Warner Bros, NBC and Walt Disney Company.  Of course, who can forget about the Tonight Show?  For many years, it was hosted by Johnny Carson, and is now hosted by Jay Leno till Conan O’Brien takes over in Fall, 2009.  The city was named after David Burbank, a dentist and entrepreneur from New Hampshire, even though it was once believed to have been named after Luther Burbank, a horticulturalist who lived in Santa Rosa. The area began to grow, with travel between Burbank and Los Angeles increasing, particularly for the early settlers bringing their produce into Los Angeles to sell, as well as buy supplies.  The transportation that was used for most was the stagecoach and train.  With the implementation of the Southern Pacific Railroad, some saw the value of the rail transport, and a group of speculators bought a lot of Dr. Burbank’s land in 1886.

Burbank has a rich history, with many ties to the early motion picture industry, and in the 21st Century, at least three of the top ten employers are motion picture and television studios.2

The Southern California Geriatric Social Work Education Consortium (GSWEC) is the nation’s first integrated regional network to improve social work education and field training among older adult services and care. The Social Work departments at the following schools are working in collabertaion with this network to provide better care for the aging population:
  • California State University, Long Beach
  • California State University, Los Angeles
  • California State University, Northridge
  • University of California, Los Angeles
  • University of Southern California 3

Current Initiatives

In 2012, the County of Los Angeles, along with the Burbank Police Department, created a program to handle the treatment of mentally ill persons. The Police found the number of calls involving the mentally ill had so increased that it became an increasing burden on the officers. They needed help and training. The result was a partnership with the LA County Department of Mental Health and the Burbank Police Department: The Burbank Mental Health Evaluation Team.4

Now, the Burbank Police consult with mental health experts when a call involves a mentally ill person. They are able to handle these incidents more compassionately, with better outcomes for the mentally ill, and those affected by the mentally ill persons behavior. It demonstrates a willingness to change police procedure in order to meet community needs and values. After the wave of school shootings all over the country, local governments must develop a plan to handle mentally ill offenders.
