Markham, located in Ontario, is north of Toronto and is considered part of Toronto’s suburbs.  Even though the city has over 260,000 people living there, the province has not given the area the title of city; thus is still considered a town.  It is also one of the fastest growing areas in Canada.  The city is also known as Canada’s Hi-Tech Capital, due to companies such as IBM, Motorola, Apple, Lucent, and a few others located here. The town was first established in 1794 when it was settled by William Berczy who first surveyed the area.  He brought many German families from New York to Markham, which is now known as the German Mills.  The largest group known to have settled there were the Pennsylvania Germans, who were also Mennonites.  It was around 1830 when many Irish, Scottish and English settlers came to Markham.1 The major industries then were the mills and agriculture.

Markham has two rivers that intersect within the town, the Don River and Rouge River.  The highest elevation in the town is 200 meters.  There are some rolling hills, but the area is mostly flat.  Markham receives its fair share of snow during the winter.  The temperature is very similar to Toronto, although it can be a couple of degrees cooler. Christian counselling starts with a solid biblical foundation as the basis for resolving issues and finding a clear new path. The town’s government is made up of a council with a mayor, four regional councilors and eight ward councilors.  They are elected by the municipality’s voters and usually serve in a part-time capacity, also working at other jobs.  They serve on a four-year term.  Markham does not have a court house, but is served by an Ontario Court of Justice, which is located in Newmarket.  Due to being a part of the greater Toronto area, Markham has some urban issues to deal with, such as urban growth and mass transit.

Mental Health in Markham

One of the fastest growing municipalities in Ontario, Markham is home to and economically and socially stable population.2 Over 60% of the residents in the city belong to 3 + person households. Despite not being considered an official geographic city, a great variety of community services are available around the region. Many of these cater to the multiculturalism in the area. Because crime rates are low, there is little gang violence and social conflict in the area. The most common mental health issues are anxiety and stress disorders developed by overworked students, public employees. Over the years, a few cases of severe bullying and racist conflict have been reported; most of them have taken place in school playgrounds.

For individuals looking for mental health services and addiction related issues, the ConnexOntario health services hotline may be reached at 1-866-531-2600.3

Current Initiatives

Though all government facilities are technically free, the most efficient and widespread mental health services in Markham are operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The York Region branch of the CMHA has offices in Aurora, close to Markham. Residents interested in seeking help for their mental health concerns will find ample assistance at their convenience. Gambling, substance abuse, family issues, relationship issues, bullying, violence, anger management and a plethora of other psychological disorders may be dealt with at the CMHA.

The CMHA also runs a self-help resource centre where adults may join peer support groups and establish connections with other people in their community to ensure that their road to recovery is easier.4 This is open to most residents of Ontario, but the York Region branch caters specifically to citizens of Markham.
