Mental Health in St. Louis

Even though Missouri residents generally use illegal drugs in fewer numbers than the national average, the use of drugs remains an ongoing challenge to those both directly and indirectly affected. Marijuana and prescription drugs are among the most often used. About 9.5 percent of St. Louis residents have a substance abuse disorder.2 As a result, mental health care in the area of addiction and recovery is in high demand.

It may be shocking to find out that "an estimated 550,000 Missourians have a serious eating disorder."3 The Missouri Eating Disorders Association’s mission is to bring hope, compassion, and understanding to the fight against eating disorders. The association is committed to providing education, resources, and advocacy that will change the conversation around eating disorders. They strive to bring understanding and support to those treating or affected by this terrible and serious disease. For further information about the association, please call 314- 413-0381.

The Megan Meier Foundation has the primary mission of educating children and their parents about bullying and cyberbullying. The foundation offers school-based educational programs that are both informative and inspirational. Children learn that diversity and differences are what make each of us unqiue and special. Individuality is encouraged, as is acceptance. Empathic understanding is also encouraged so that students develop an understanding of how their words can hurt others. Presenters are highly skilled and trained in educating youth about these sensitive subjects. Further information about the foundation can be obtained by calling 636-757-3501.3
