The history of London, Ontario includes the Old East Heritage Conservation District created under the Heritage Act which was established as a renewal of historic buildings one of which is the London Muslim Mosque.  The climate is humid with contrasting distinct seasons.  This provides for agricultural production from the farmland.  Food is exported across the country providing citizens some of the unique fare of the area. Storm watchers come to see these wonderful light shows and to photograph the bolts as they cut across the sky.  It is a wonderful past time of locals and many of these dazzling photos can be seen online.  Once hit by a bolt of lightning, your chances for a second hit are increased due to the electrical charge you carry.

The London Life Insurance Company, and Labatt and Carling Breweries were founded in London.  The economy is driven by information technology, life sciences research, and vehicle manufacturing and production.   The Kellogg Canada plant is the most technologically advanced cereal plant within the company.  Employees from the city work in the factories in the suburbs which include Ford and General Motors employers.  The introduction of slot machines came from the Western Fair Association in 1999 with 750 machines operating around the year.  The downtown business suffered after the closure of Eaton’s and the Hudson’s Bay Company. If living seems disjointed, stagnant, or difficult, Christian An area of the Galleria is now occupied by the central library and information centers for Fanshawe College and the University of Western Ontario.1 Numerous international employers have used London for test marketing to introduce products to Canada.

Mental Health in London

London is a city of nearly 400, 000 residents, and is most popularly known as something of a college town. Youth initiatives and student empowerment are common sentiments amongst the people, and many community non profit organizations have campaigned for the development of better mental health services. University students often develop mental health issues due to the stress of school commitments and the demands of college life. The result is a general rise in anxiety disorders and violent behaviour.

The University of Western Ontario (UWO), based in London runs a not-for-profit Student Development Centre where individual counseling sessions offer a variety of solution based therapy techniques.2 Students and adolescents from the university and around the city may join personal or group workshops to discuss concerns related several issues.

Some of the many counseling services offered at the UWO student development centre include:

Stress& Anxiety
Relationship Issues
Body Image issues
Anger Management
Emotional & Physical Abuse

For more information, anyone interested may contact the University's student development centre at 661-3031. For London Residents looking to access a 24 hour crisis hotline, call 1-866-933-2023.3

Current Initiatives

The Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) London-Middlesex branch is the largest not-for-profit mental health institution in Western Ontario.4 Citizens also have the option to take part in the WOTCH community mental health services. WOTCH is the Western Ontario Therapeutic Community Hospital. It's a residential counseling facility where participants check themselves in for a short period of time of their choosing, and devote their time to discussing strategies to deal with mental health issues. It has launched several of its programs in amalgamation with the CMHA, and is an excellent non-profit mental health facility at the disposal of London's residents.
