Meet Dr. Elizabeth Nyang

My name is Dr. Elizabeth Nyang. I have a Master’s degree in counseling from Seaton Hall University and a doctorate degree in counseling psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology and have been in practice for over ten years. I work with clients (adults and adolescents) that have issues with mental health and/or alcohol abuse. I accept clients with depression, anxiety, problems at work, problems within the family, mood disorders, and adjustment issues. I use a cognitive behavioral approach and Gestalt techniques integrated with meditation and tai chi to help clients gain insight into the root causes of their problems or parenting issues and reduce stress.

My Meditation Journey

I started actively using meditation in 2005.   Meditation is a way to relax the body and clear your mind while strengthening our ability to moment to moment awareness or mindfulness into our path.  My personal meditation practice allows me to sit quietly and focus on my breath to quiet my mind. If thoughts do come, I do not try to stop them but I also do not pass judgement on myself.

Meditation with Clients

I work with client to help them learn to use meditation (sitting, walking, and movement in the form of tai chi) to relieve stress and lessen the feeling of anxiety.  I have studied tai chi for over 5 years and have studied the Yang Style 108 Long Form for the last 2 years.   This year I developed a set of Tai Chi Meditation cards and videos to help clients build their personal tai chi practice.

Integrated Tai Chi, Meditation, and CBT Therapy Session

This is a mindfulness based session that integrates Tai Chi and meditation techniques to reduce stress and focus clearly on what matters most to you. One can learn relaxing Tai Chi postures like 'repulse the monkey' or “brush knee pale” to develop a flowing and relaxing movement meditation. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also integrated into this session to help you explore and investigate personal issues that keep you stuck.  In addition to integrating meditation and tai chi into my practice, I also use music therapy and narrative therapy when appropriate to help you identify what you need to let go of and move forward in life.

Professional Associations

I am a member of the Maryland Counseling Association and former President of the Maryland Counseling Association. I am also a liaison between the Maryland Counseling Association and the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor of Maryland.
