The agency recruits volunteers who undergo training and devote time each week to their assigned friend. Mentors work with their friends to promote healthy behaviors, raise self-esteem, improve social skills, and encourage self-sufficiency. By providing a positive role model for mentally ill individuals, Compeer increases the likelihood that their clients will continue on a path to improved mental health. This skills-based group teaches participants strategies for managing their emotions and expressing their feelings in a productive manner. Children or adults who are experiencing a mental health emergency can seek comfort and guidance via the Mental Health Association of Erie County. The organization operates two crisis hotlines to ensure that children and adults in the community have access to services 24-hours a day, seven-days a week. The child hotline workers can provide assistance over the phone, or are available to meet with children and their parent or guardian in the community. The adult hotline helps individuals relieve emotional distress, deal with aggressive or harmful thoughts, and connect with local emergency resources. Current Initiatives

The Sexual Minority Initiative is a program designed by Evergreen Health Services of Western New York. The purpose of the initiative is to increase access to medical and mental health services, while raising awareness of issues that impact the LGBTQ community. One of the hallmarks of the initiative is the Life Changes Program, which reaches out to young gay men of color who face many obstacles to sound mental health and overall wellbeing. The initiative assists this population by providing access to housing, health promotion activities, education programs, and mental health care services.
