In 1974 Brampton and Bramalea merged and the development of one city proceeded.  When the Odeon closed the Capitol Theatre, it was renamed the Heritage Theatre and turned into a home for the musical and performing arts. The new Rose Theatre replaced this original structure.  In 1997 the William Osler Health Centre became the 6th largest hospital corporation in Ontario with the amalgamation of Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and Peel Memorial Hospital.1 In 2007 the new Brampton Civic Hospital opened its doors to replace the older entity.  For individuals seeking healing and better emotional and mental health, psychotherapy provides dynamic and effective treatment addressing both past and present issues for a better future.

The multicultural population with immigration showed a need for English as a Second Language and this was undertaken by the Peel Board of Education with volunteer instructors.  In a short time the daytime courses were taught by qualified, paid instructors.  The Catholic Board expanded to language programs offering classes in over twenty languages.Focused and compassionate treatment is available those who seeking healing with a spiritual focus.  The motivation came from parents who wished their children to pursue their ancestral language and heritage.  The Carabran festival hosts Italian, Scottish, Ukrainian and West Indian cultures with over fifty thousand visitors in over twenty pavilions, being anchored by a Canada pavilion at the 25th anniversary.  There is a visible South Asian presence.

Mental Health in Brampton

Brampton crime rate is increasing from the past 3 years. People, houses, and cars are robbed all the time. Drugs are a major issue. There's also a problem with Indian on black racism, especially in the schools. Stay away from places like chinguacousy, williams parkway, and pretty much all of Springdale. Brampton is not safe for small and medium business also, every day more then one store broken and things stolen, big fear in business community. The new people who move here no longer have pride in ownership. Seeing police cars parked in front of certain homes has become the norm.2

To sum everything up, basically, Brampton has a problem with robberies, drug use, and racial violence. But it is still not considered a "Ghetto" and is no where close to higher crime areas like Rexdale, Jane & Finch and Lawrence Heights.3

Current Initiatives

A three year project is underway by the Province of Ontario to improve mental health services being provided to college and university students.4 The province has backed this initiative with over $27 million in funding and involves eleven proposals. One proposal is a mental health hotline available to the city of Brampton and through the entire province of Ontario. This 24/7 hotline will be available to students and will provide mental health referrals and other information.
