The Emerald City, nicknamed for the lush evergreen forests surrounding this Pacific Northwest area is the largest coastal port city in this region. Surrounded by the waters of Lake Washington and Puget Sound, it is approximately 100 miles south of the Canadian-United States border.1 European settlers arrived in the mid 1800s, and now Seattle's population is over 630,000 people.1 The metro area that includes Tacoma, Bellevue and Everett has well over 3 million people. In 1971 three friends opened the first Starbucks at Pike Place Market in Seattle and from there expanded to foreign soil at the Waterfront Station in Vancouver, British Columbia. For a day of family fun, consider a visit to the Pacific Science Center. Children love to learn about how our world works and will be fascinated with the exhibits. Microsoft, the world's largest software manufacturer, moved to Bellevue in 1979. Seattleites have been referred to as the most literate and educated of people among American cities.

Mental Health in Seattle

As in many cities across the nation, some Seattle residents struggle with substance abuse. However, a greater percentage of Seattle citizens use drugs than citizens in many other cities. Nearly 20 percent of people 12 years of age or older in Seattle report having used an illegal drug in the past year, which far surpasses the national average of 14.7 percent. Over 9 percent of adults in Seattle have a substance abuse disorder and another 7.5 percent struggle with depression.2 As a result, thousands of people in the Seattle area are living with a mental health issue that would benefit greatly from therapy and clincial treatment.

Dozens of support groups are offered in the Seattle area for people who live with mental illness. Those who have an obsessive-compulsive disorder and their family members can participate in the OCD/Hoarding group. Family support groups for those with a loved one who has a serious and persistent mental illness meet throughout the city. Young adults who live with psychosis can find encouragement in the Appreciative Living Group. All groups are conducted by the Seattle chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and are offered for free. For information about group meeting times and locations, please call 206-783-9264.3
