The ‘City of Waterfalls’, Hamilton is situated between Oshawa and Niagara Falls on the western shores of Lake Ontario, in an area referred to as the ‘Golden Horseshoe’ which is 150 miles in length and 50 miles wide. A huge attraction for families, and children young and old, it draws thousands of visitors each year. George Hamilton purchased a farm after WWI which was the beginning of this important city. In this manufacturing and industrial area known as the Steel Capital of Canada the major players have been Stelco and Dofasco. In 2006, Dofasco was honored by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, producing products for construction, automotive, energy and manufacturing. From the 1990s onward the economy of this region has shifted to the health and science services employing 10,000 residents in the health and mental health fields (including psychotherapy), which serve over two million people.
Growth continued and the United States company of Procter and Gamble and the Beech-Nut Packing Company were opened around the 1920s. The fertile ground was attracting agriculture to the area. A high-rise was constructed in 1929, the McMaster University moved in from Toronto, and Canadian Tire opened its second store in 1934. The airport was opened in 1940, the Studebaker automobile assembly line in 1948 and in 1964 the first Tim Horton’s coffee house.1 Hamilton is half way between Toronto, Ontario and Buffalo, New York. Therapy can bring illumination and answers for individuals seeking spiritual help with their lives. The city’s major attraction features the Hamilton Harbour on the northern limit. The book, ‘Green city: People, Nature and Urban Places’ by Mary Soderstrom, shows how this industrial city is placed within parks, green spaces and tall forests enjoyed by wild game.
