Who am I?

As a life-long resident of Penticton, I have lived, worked, volunteered and raised my five children here. I completed my Masters of Social Work at the University of British Columbia and am honoured to continue contributing to this area as a professional.

How do I work?

I see personal growth as a life-long journey - it is never 'done.' The greater the challenges, the greater the potential for learning. While we usually manage to negotiate those challenges fairly well, sometimes we need help. Seeking help takes courage. I approach those who invite me to share their journey with the greatest respect as well as compassion, empathy and faith in their inner wisdom, strength and resilience. I also take a balanced, holistic perspective of people, problems and potential solutions.

What experience do I have?

Professionally, I have worked with children, youth and families at risk; adults with addictions; and both victims and perpetrators of violence/abuse. A common thread among this varied group of clients is childhood exposure to violence, which affects overall well-being and capacity to cope. Personally, I am deeply familiar with the challenges associated with parenting, relationship breakdown, mental illness, grief/loss, and career development. I have  completed Level II training in the Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which I apply in my practice, and am a Divorce Coach.

What am I passionate about?

Learning and personal growth are passions for me, and I embrace opportunities for expanding knowledge and skills, whether my own or others'. I find it exciting to see people's faces light up with understanding as they begin to see things differently, or watch people's spirits gradually lift as they gain confidence in newly discovered strengths or skills. Having seen the impact of early life experiences in the pain that permeates the lives of so many adults, I am also passionate about ensuring children have the nurturing environments they need to reach their full potential.

How will you benefit from seeing me?

Highly empathic, understanding and non-judgmental, I provide a safe place to fully explore the sensitive issues brought to counselling. I listen attentively, tuning in to my keen intuition to understand the concerns being shared, gently offering insights, observations, feedback or information as appropriate to help clients understand where they've come from, why they are here and where they are headed. People generally leave my office feeling better and more confident than when they arrived. Sometimes they leave with something to work on before the next session, or perhaps referrals to additional resources.

What people have said after counselling with me:

*    I feel safe talking about my feelings and what is bothering me.

*    I am able to express my behaviour and feelings without being judged.

*    I feel very comfortable with Rhea; she is dedicated and able,  always on time and ready to go.

*    Because of this counselling I feel more confident, more aware of my feelings, that I am human and will make mistakes and how I will handle things in the future.
