About Dr. Rich Audsley, LMFT
I established Evergreen Family Matters to treat behavioral and emotional problems within the context of the family structure or system. I work with families and couples in intimate relationships to facilitate and nurture change and development.

The issues of an individual family member are often a reflection of some conflict within the family system as a whole. It is difficult to treat adolescent problems and family issues without also addressing problems that likely underlie the supporting family structure.

My Experience

While many therapists offer counseling, Marriage and Family Therapists are different from other counselors in that they have many hours of specific training in working with couples on marriage problems, training in communications skills, intimacy and sexuality, and in marriage repair and recovery. MFTs work with a couple systematically, as if they have three clients: the wife, the husband, and their marriage relationship.

I am a graduate of Regis University’s marriage and family therapy program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. I am also a Ph.D. student and adjunct professor at Adams State University. My core training is in family systems, which means I look at family interaction and communication patterns, both past and present, to better understand whatever issue is problematic in the family. Our reactions to stressors whether they are financial, parenting, marital or work related are usually predictable and shaped by our life experiences. As a MFT, I find the hidden triggers that cause conflict, understand the source of your problems, teach you to communicate skillfully, manage your frustrations, and help you rebuild your relationship.

My theoretical orientation is based upon the work of many of my teachers, trainers, and mentors over the years, and I predominantly draw from the Family Systems Therapy work of Virginia Satir, Murray Bowen’s Intergenerational Theory, The Marriage Clinic Approach of John Gottman, and Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg’s Emotionally Focused Therapy. My personal approach features genuineness, warmth and a sense of humor, which creates a trusting atmosphere for my clients. With this authentic atmosphere, my clients have the freedom to express themselves openly and honestly while receiving the support needs to meet their personal goals.

A Typical Session with Rich

Beginning therapy can be a big step toward being the healthiest version of yourself and living the best life possible—no matter what challenges you may be facing. Through therapy, you can change self-destructive behaviors and habits, resolve painful feelings, improve your relationships, and more. This is what a typical family or couples session looks like at Evergreen Family Matters:
You will all be together for at least part of the session, both to hear everyone’s view of the problem that brought you to treatment, and to see how you interact with each other and what roles you play in the family and/or marriage.
  • I will attempt to get the perspective of each family member on a number of important dimensions, not just the presenting problem.

  • I may interview sub-units of the family system separately, like the parents, or the children, or even spend time with each family member individually.

  • The rules for the sessions will be explained--like confidentiality of information disclosed within the family, or who needs to attend ongoing sessions and perhaps does not. It is sometimes not practical or necessary for everyone to be present.

Too often, especially in the face of a challenge, we seem to discount all of the good things and focus solely on the negative. I want to highlight all of these good things (your strengths, your partner’s strengths, etc.) and share how we will use them as tools to best address the concerns you share.
