My name is Vanessa McCall and along with private practice as an RCC, I work as a counsellor in schools working with children alongside their families, teachers, special education assistants, and administrators. I received my Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia.  My goal has always been to establish a safe, caring, and non-judgmental environment in which I help guide children to mindfully gain self-awareness so that they may better manage their behaviour and communicate more effectively. I have worked with a diverse population of children and their families as well as a multitude of challenges that they might be facing. This can be anything from generalized anxieties and anger management to some of the difficulties and changes families face with separations/divorces and blended family dynamics.

I have implemented several programs into my counselling practice which I have been certified in (i.e. MindUp, The Worry Dragons, Friends for Life, and Life Stress Reduction). All of these can be tailored to the specific needs of my clients, especially when it comes to dealing with the complexities of anxiety. One of the most successful approaches to helping individuals cope with anxiety is educating them about the ailment itself and developing their awareness of how it physiologically and psychologically affects us all individually. It is then that several cognitive behavioral interventions are introduced so as to give my clients better coping mechanisms to deal with their specific concerning issues and to help them lead a more manageable lifestyle.

I am client-centred in that I truly believe in the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client as well as building a strong and trusting rapport between us both. I believe this therapeutic alliance is crucial for counselling to be productive, effective, and for clients to truly invest in their mental well being.  In the process, this will promote their ability for change, self awareness, behavioral management, and personal growth.
