MY APPROACH TO THERAPY

In a caring and supportive way, I approach each person who comes to me for counseling with a deep sense of reverence and respect!  My primary goal is to create a welcoming environment in which you feel safe, comfortable, and accepted for who you are; this is essential for effective Therapy.

Individual Psychotherapy: A Wholistic View
I believe each individual is a unified whole.  In therapy sessions, I view each person as a whole rather than just focusing on their isolated parts, such as feelings or behaviors.  While I recognize the individuality and uniqueness of each person’s needs, problems, and concerns, I address issues with the whole person in mind, taking into account all the dimensions of human life: physical, mental, emotional, and relational. Thus, my ultimate goal in therapy is to facilitate growth into wholeness and harmonious integration.

Hence, symptoms are viewed as signs that point to something in us that needs our listening and care.  So rather than focusing solely on removing or treating the so-called "problems," my approach honors the whole person in their longing for connection, meaning, and depth, as well as their desire for positive change, joy, and a balanced and abundant life.  In other words…fully human and fully alive.

Couples Counseling: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
At some point in the life of many couples, they feel stuck in cycles of negative interactions that keep drifting them apart, robbing them of the dream of happiness they yearn for and the intimate connection they once felt. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy focuses on restoring the emotional bond between partners/spouses and creating new patterns of positive interactions between them that redefine the relationship and bring them closer together. This process is a journey from isolation and loneliness to an intimate connection and loving relationship.  It's on the basis of this secure love that partners can effectively work through their conflicts, disagreements, and differences long into their futures together.

When EFT is successfully implemented, each partner becomes a source of security, protection, and contact comfort for the other.  Each partner can then assist the other in regulating negative affect and constructing a positive  and potent sense of self.         - Suzan Johnson, PhD

Family Therapy: A Systems and Growth-Oriented Approach

Each family is a unique emotional system that has its own structure and patterns of interaction and communication.  The focus of family therapy is to facilitate creative change in the interpersonal relationships among family members and in the family system as a whole.  We hope to create a healthy family environment in which growth flourishes for each individual.

Goals of family therapy may include:
  • Helping the family focus less on the member who has been identified as the “problem” and more on the family unit.
  • Interrupting negative cycles of interaction and gradually replacing them with healthier relationship pattern
  • Strengthening all members so they can work on their problems together.
  • Teaching new skills to effectively handle conflict and changes within the family.
  • Strengthening emotional connections through open communication and caring behaviors.

I enjoy the simple things in life and appreciate family, friendships, random acts of kindness, and a gentle walk in nature or on the beach. I love music, sports, and photography and strive to live a balanced life, honoring and nurturing to the best of my ability all the dimensions of my human existence—body, mind, spirit, and relationships.
