Hi, I’m Dr. Athena Staik, a licensed marriage and family therapist currently in private practice at my Woodbridge office in Northern Virginia. I provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and children ages 10 and up.
My specialties include working with issues related to anxiety, depression, addictions, in particular, addictive or toxic relating patterns, and compulsions involving love, sex and infidelity. I have been trained in and use several strengths-based approaches to include solution-focused, experiential, narrative and cognitive-behavioral therapies as well as dialectical behavior therapy, conjoint family therapy, family systems, attachment, and Adlerian theoretical structures.
My work with individuals, couples and families is about how to we can use some of the most powerful psychological principles available, along with proven interventions, and the latest scientific findings about the brain, to breakthrough obstacles and create not only lasting change, but also live the best personal life and relationships possible. My passion is to lead clients to break free of defensive reactivity, compulsive behaviors or addictive relating patterns, and, in the process, awaken, transform and live their dream life and relationships.
I believe the quality of our lives, as individuals, is determined by the quality of our relationships. Relationships are our connection to life’s joys, meaning and purpose. Yet, they can also be sources of ongoing pain and frustration. The challenges are many, however. We need a compassionate way of relating (to self as well as others) that nurtures and strengthens our connections, that inspires our best efforts, and that acknowledges each person as uniquely valued.
For more than 10 years, I have studied cognitive/affective neuroscience and brain-based cutting edge tools for accelerated change, performance enhancement and success, and have developed my own therapeutic approach, Conscious-Love relationship therapy, a synthesis of proven psychological interventions, neuroscience, attachment theory, emotional intelligence, and the latest findings on the brain and intimate relations, that allows individuals and couples to move beyond the traditional psychological school of thought to energize quantum shifts in the way they experience one another and their relationship within the therapeutic process.
I regard therapy as a powerful experience to deepen self-awareness and empower ourselves to realize the meaningful life and relationships we yearn to actualize. In addition to private practice, I have taught as an adjunct professor in the disciplines of psychology, family science and sociology for over 12 years. I received my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2004 from Florida State University, and my M.A. in Psychology in 1996 from the University of West Florida.
